The Boulton-Paul Defiant was the only 'turret fighter' to enter service with the RAF. The Defiant used the philosophy that a fighter aircraft, armed solely with a turret bristling with machine guns would be able to enter a bomber stream causing havoc and the turret would also enable it to defend itself from enemy fighters.

During its first few engagements during the Battle of Britain in 1940, enemy pilots were taken by surprise and the Defiant fared well but soon the Luftwaffe pilots worked out its weaknesses, especially the lack of forward firing guns and the Defiant was soon relegated to night fighting duties were it fared better.

The Hurricane was developed as a replacement for the RAFs pre-war bi-plane fighters, such as the Hawker Fury and Gloster Gauntlet. Considered revolutionary when it was unveiled in 1935, by the start of WWII the earliest versions with fabric covered wings and two bladed propellers had fallen behind the performance of the best German fighters.

Nevertheless, once fitted with 3-blade propellers these early Hurricanes were very successful during the Battle of Britain in 1940.

XH558 was the last Vulcan to leave the RAF service, flying on from 1986 to 1993 as the single RAF Display Vulcan, a career of 33 years. Her final flight was on 23rd March 1993 to Bruntingthorpe Aerodrome in Leicestershire, having been sold off by the Ministry of Defence.

In 1997, a small team headed by Dr Robert Pleming started to put together an audacious plan to return her to flight, but it was clear from the start that the project would be technically challenging and enormously expensive. Never deterred, the team set off down the path that led to XH558's return to the air.

Finally, fourteen years after its last service and with over 7 million pounds spent, Vulcan XH558 roared into the air again on Thursday 18th October 2007, a perfect day for flying. An unforgettable day for the Vulcan to the Sky team.

Designed at the height of the Cold War during the 1950s, the English Electric Lightning was the only all British Mach 2 fighter to enter service with the RAF, where its performance placed it well ahead of contemporary rivals. The Lightning's engines were positioned in a unique staggered stacked installation and their huge power gave the Lightning an exceptional rate of climb, service ceiling and top speed. The F1 version of the Lightning entered service in 1959, with the improved F1A following in 1961. Various improved versions of the Lightning were introduced through the 1960s, all of them attempting to either improve the endurance of the aircraft, an area in which the Lightning struggled, or the lack of armament options for the type. While successive variants did improve these areas, the Lightning was still hampered by them up until its eventual replacement in the late 1980s.

While the Lancaster saw the vast majority of its service as a high altitude night bomber, attacking strategic targets deep within Germany, notably its involvement in the battles of the Ruhr, Hamburg and Berlin, it was a daring low level raid that gave the Lancaster arguably its finest hour. The Dambusters raid, as it has since become known, was one of the most famous opertions of the war. Led by Wing Commander Guy Gibson, the nineteen specially modified Lancaster bombers attacked the Mohne, Eder, Sorpe, and Ennepe dams, with the Mohne and Eder dams being breached.

This caused widespread drestruction to both the German war effort and food production. The dams were breached using a special type of bomb, the Upkeep mine, or 'bouncing bomb'. This was rotated before being dropped so that is skipped along the surface before impacting against the dam, sinking and exploding, thus rupturing the dam. This avoided the need for high altitude raid and avoided torpedo nets. the attack was a partial success, but greatly improved the morale of the Allies and the British public.

Operation Chastise was the official name for the attacks on the German dams, which occured on 17th May 1943 during the Second World War. The attack was carried out buy 617 Squadron RAF, specially formed for this unique and highly dangerous mission. The squadron subsequently became known as the legendary Dambusters.

The Hawker Hurricane was the most numerous fighter in service with the RAF at the start of the Battle of Britain. The Hawker went on to prove itself a vital effective fighter aircraft on all fronts of the Second World War. It came to be regarded as a rugged and reliable ground attack machine, but it was undoubtedly the service as a defensive fighter during the Battle of Britain that forged its reputation as on of the wars greatest fighters.

Entering service with 111 Squadron in December 1937, the original fabric wings made way for metal ones by 1939. During the Battle of Britain, the average strength of the fighter command was 1,326 Hurricanes compared with 957 Spitfires. It was the Hurricane that Flt. Lt. Nicholson gained the fighter commands' only Victoria Cross of the war, downing an enemy Messerschmit Bf110, while his own aircraft was engulfed in flames.

After the Battle of Britain, the Hurricane went on to serve in the Far East, as well as the Desert and Eastern Front.

THIS MODEL IS NO LONGER MADE BY CORGI - END OF LINE! SPECIAL PRICE!

Of the RAF bombers involved in operations over Germany during the Second World War, the Avro Lancaster must rank as the most famous of them all. Although Merlin engines were the more usual power plant for the Lancaster, not all were produced using them. Due to the demands put on Rolls Royce by the production aircraft such as the Supermarine Spitfire and the DeHavilland Mosquito, there loomed a potential shortage of the vital Merlin and the BII variant was equipped with Bristol Hercules radial engines instead. The first of which was completed in September 1942.

Faster to 18,000ft, these radial engines were also able to soak up more damage than the normally fitted Merlin. However, the service ceiling was lower and with the perceived shortage over by 1944, the BII was phased out of service at the start on 1945. A worthy alternative to the normal variants, the BII proved to be popular with its crews and a capable version of the excellent bomber.

The first types of Handley Page Halifax, the Marks I and II, were fitted with in-line engines and triangular fins and it was not until 1944 that the radial-engine Mark III appeared. The Halifax B.III, in addition to its more powerful engines and redesigned tail unit, featured much heavier armaments than the earlier aircraft and a greatly improved performance.

When production ceased in 1946, 6176 Halifaxes had been produced, and over 2,000 of these were the B.III variant. The Halifax B.III was powered by four Bristol Hercules XVI engines, each of 1,675hp, giving a maximum speed of 451.20km/h and range of up to 3,176km. The Jet Provost was introduced in the late 1950s and quickly became the RAF's premier jet basic trainer. The T3 model, introduced in 1959, featured an uprated engine and an improved canopy design, offering the side by side seated pilot and pupil a much improved view. The Provost was a joy to fly, forgiving and easy to learn on, with many of the 1960s and 70s RAF front line pilots learning their trade on its un-swept wings. Its reliability and strength also added to its suitability as a jet trainer and the addition of wing tip tanks on the T3 also added to its endurance.

The second World War had seriously affected Great Britain's abilities to proceed with airliner development, and it was realised that the USA would have virtual domination in this field unless steps were taken to catch up. The Brabazon Committee was formed in 1943 to look into Britain's post war aviation prospects, and a series of recommendations was issued in 1944; one of these was to produce an advanced turbojet powered airliner for BOAC.

The De Havilland company pursued design concepts which led to the D.H. 106 Comet in 1946, and in a very short period of time the first prototype flew of 27 July 1949. The Comet 1 first entered BOAC service in May 1952, becoming the world's first jet passenger aircraft. With the improved Comet 2, orders from airlines around the world rapidly increased until the tragic losses of two BOAC Comet 1 in January and April 1954; the cause of these losses remained a mystery until exhaustive testing revealed hitherto unknown problems connected with metal fatigue, and thereafter all Comets were subjected to extensive redesign and rebuilding.

The Comet 3 re-emerged as the Comet 4, which BOAC ordered in quantity in 1957. From 1958, British European Airways orders rose to 14 of the modified Comet 4B, which featured a lengthened fuselage giving high-density seating for up to 86 passengers, and a reduction of the wing span and deletion of the leading edge fuel.

Entering RAF squadron service in 1960, the Lightning represented a quantum leap in capability and performance over the RAF's previous interceptor jets, offering Mach 2+ performance as well as a phenomenal rate of climb. Until its retirement in the 1980s, the Lightning had few rivals for outright speed and climbing ability. However it was hampered by short range and a poor selection of armament. Its accident rate was also alarming. Replaced by the Tornado F3, the Lightning however remains the ultimate Cold War interceptor.

The earliest Lightning mark F1 entered RAF squadron service in 1960 and represented a quantum leap in capability and performance over its predecessors offering an integrated weapons system, Mach 2+ performance and a phenomenal rate of climb.

The F2 introduced in 1962 was heavily modified in 1968 producing the F2A with square cut fin, kinked leading edges and enlarged ventral tank which gave an enhanced combat air patrol time of around two hours.

The F2A adapted superbly from its original high altitude role to patrolling the Berlin Corridor at low level. Replaced by Phantoms in RAF Germany 1977, the Lightning had few rivals for speed and rate of climb.

Bearing the distinction of being the first RAF fighter to exceed 200mph in level flight, the Hawker Fury was one of the most capable fighters of the era until surpassed, first by the Gloster Gladiator and then by the monoplane Hawker Hurricane and Supermarine Spitfire.

While beautiful and fast, the Fury was also much more expensive to produce compared to its contemporaries, such as the Bristol Bulldog, resulting in it seeing only limited frontline service. By the outbreak of World War II, the Fury only served with the South African Air Force as a front line fighter, the RAF examples, had all been retired to second line duties.

In the event BEA only accepted six of these aircraft, having the remainder delivered as V953 Vanguards IIs fitted with improved Tyne R.Ty.lIs, The 'double-bubble' fuselage of the Vanguard allowed considerable freight to be carried below the passenger deck, and later on some Vanguards were converted for use with BEA and British Airways solely as freighters, this type was known as the Merchantman.

Well-suited for amphibious warfare and the tactical insertion of ground troops, the 'Commando' was an important variant of the Sea King. It was initially proposed as a tactical transport for the Egyptian Air Force for which the amphibious capability of earlier Sea Kings was not required and so the side floats were deleted. With folding rotors and tail, the Commando entered service with the Royal Navy as the Sea King HC.4.

It would eventually be provided with radar-warning and infrared jamming devices, and could also deploy M130/M147 flares as countermeasures. Besides troops, it could also be fitted to carry underslung loads of up to 2.5 tonnes. Increased range and a 28-troop capacity made it ideal as an amphibious transport aircraft, and the HC.4 would see operational service in the Falklands, Balkans, Gulf, Lebanon and Afghanistan conflicts. It was often deployed in order to evacuate wounded personnel and refugees, as well as preparing for and supporting ground advances. It is due to be retired from UK forces service in March 2016

The Supermarine Spitfire Mk.Vb was the most widely produced variant of the Mk.V series of Spitfires. Entering service with the RAF in early 1941 the Mk.Vb variant incorporated a number of improvements over earlier Spitfires. Most notably it was the first common variant to be fitted with the 'B' wing, comprising two 20mm cannons and four .303in Browning machine guns. This gave the Mk.Vb a big increase in firepower, something lacking from the earlier all machine gun armed Spitfires.

Also introduced were fishtail exhausts, giving a slightly improved exhaust thrust and therefore performance, metal covered ailerons, a deeper oil cooler and the front windscreen was also altered to one featuring an internally armoured section. The Malcolm Hood was also improved, offering a better overall view for the pilot.

Two different types of propellers (DeHavilland and Rotol) were used and the Mk.Vb could be fitted with long range slipper tanks. Other modifications were introduced for the Mk.Vb Tropical including the prominent tropical filter under the nose and a deeper radiator. While the Spitfire Mk.Vb was used by the RAF in large numbers it was also the first to be truly out-performed by an enemy fighter. With the introduction of the Focke Wulf Fw190 in mid-1941, the Mk.Vb was outclassed over the Channel Front and in an effort to compete with the Fw190's manoeuvrability, some Spitfire Mk.Vbs had shortened wing tips, but it was not until the introduction of the Mk.IX some time later that the RAF found its Spitfires in the ascendancy again.

The Mk.Vb was later equipped with bombs and used as a low-level fighter-bomber and even a dive-bomber, roles to which the Spitfire did not prove to be ideally suited. However, the Mk.Vb was used to great affect over the Mediterranean where its shape and sound become synonymous with the defence of the beleaguered island of Malta. A beautiful machine to fly, the Spitfire Mk.Vb is today considered by many to be one of the prettiest and best of the breed.

The Bristol Beaufighter was a WWII British long range heavy fighter, developed from the earlier Beaufort design. Featuring two powerful Bristol Hercules engines, the aircraft gained a fearsome reputation for being both fast and able to deliver a powerful blow from its four 20mm cannons and a choice of either Torpedo or Rocket projectiles. Although developed to be a fighter, and used successfully as a night fighter, it was the TF.X Coastal Command version that was most successful; its range and power enabling it to take a heavy toll of Axis shipping.

Entering RAF squadron service in 1960, the Lightning represented a quantum leap in capability and performance over the RAF's previous interceptor jets, offering Mach 2+ performance as well as a phenomenal rate of climb. Until its retirement in the 1980s, the Lightning had few rivals for outright speed and climbing ability, however it did have some shortcomings, most notably its lack of range as well as its limited armament of just two air to air missiles.

The F3 Lightning introduced an enlarged ventral tank with later versions also being equipped with overwing tanks, improving the range of the Lightning. These versions deleted the nose guns of the earlier variants, thus reducing the ability of the Lightning pilots to get in close to their opponents. They also did nothing to overcome its missile deficiency, with the Lightning still having to rely on two missles.

The Lightning was eventually replaced in 1988, as it was superseded by the more capable and heavily armed Tornado. A number of these planes have survived and can be found in museums across the country, a reminder of one of the RAF's fastest fighter jets of all time.

While the Lancaster saw the vast majority of its service as a high altitude night bomber attacking strategic targets deep within Germany, notably its involvement in the battles of the Ruhr, Hamburg and Berlin, it was a daring low-level raid that gave the Lancaster arguably its finest hour.

The Dambusters raid, as it has since become known, was one the most famous operations of the war. Led by Wing Commander Guy Gibson, the 19 specially modified Lancaster bombers attacked the Mohne, Eder, Sorpe and Ennepe dams, with the Mohne and Eder dams being breached. This caused widespread destruction to both the German war effort and to food production.

The dams were breached using a special type of bomb, the Upkeep mine, or 'bouncing bomb'. This was rotated before being dropped so that it skipped along the surface before impacting against the dam, sinking and exploding, thus rupturing the dam. This avoided the need for a high altitude raid and avoided the torpedo nets. The attack was a partial success but greatly improved the morale of the Allies and the British public.

Historically, the Gloster Meteor was Britain's first jet fighter and the only Allied jet aircraft to see service during the Second World War. The F.8 variant of the Meteor was perhaps the definitive incarnation of this famous aircraft and was the main RAF fighter throughout the 1950s, until superseded by the Hawker Hunter.

As the first jet aircraft to see service with the Royal Air Force, the Gloster Meteor will always be seen as historically important. A stable and reliable aircraft, the Meteor soon became outclassed as an air superiority fighter, but the effectiveness of the basic design allowed the aircraft to be used in a variety of other roles.

In combat with MiG 15 fighters over Korea, Royal Australian Air Force Meteors were found to be severely lacking as dogfighters and were to suffer at the hands of this diminutive Soviet fighter. It was quickly relegated to ground attack duties, where it proved to be extremely effective.

Developed as a small, lightweight and manoeuvrable fighter, the Folland Gnat was never accepted into RAF service in that role. However, after being re-designed with two seats, it found its niche as a superb trainer and its small size and excellent aerobatic capability made it a natural choice for the RAF's aerobatic teams. The Yellow Jacks first used the Gnat to great effect, before the Red Arrows used it as their first aircraft.

Designed by W.E.W Petter, the Gnat entered RAF service in 1962 giving trainee pilots the perfect first experience of fast jets before they moved onto the Hunters and Lightnings they would fly on front line duties. Eventually the introduction of the Hawk jet trainer meant the end for the Gnat and they were phased out of RAF service in the late 1970s. A large number were however passed to private operators where they still continue to be displayed at air shows.

Skill Level : 2
The skill level, from 1 - 4, explains how difficult the model will be. A higher skill level often has more parts and is more challenging to build.
