DESCRIPTION

A complete compendium of a never to be equalled test career in pictures and with commentary by Paul Beaver, Winkle's authorised biographer.

Captain Eric Melrose 'Winkle' Brown (CBE DSC AFC RN) was a legend. He will be linked forever with pioneering naval aviation, test flying and his detailed reports of German aeronautical and technological advances during the Second World War.

'Winkle' is also arguably the world's greatest test pilot. His record of 487 different types of aircraft flown will never be broken. He is also the holder of numerous other records: 1st twin engine deck landing; 1st jet aircraft deck landing; most carrier deck landings and most carrier catapult launches.

Paul Beaver's carefully researched and lavishly illustrated book lists all the aircraft flown by this extraordinary flyer and it is peppered with comments from Winkle on the characteristics of some of the key marques. Essential reading for any aviation enthusiast.

DESCRIPTION

Eric Brown was on a University of Edinburgh exchange course in Germany in 1939, and the first he knew of the war was when the Gestapo came to arrest him. Not realising he was a pilot in the RAF volunteer reserve, they released him; and the rest is history.

Eric Brown joined the Fleet Air Arm and went on to be the greatest test pilot in history, flying more different aircraft types than anyone else.

Speaking perfect German, he went to Germany in 1945 to test the Nazi jets, interviewing (among others) Hermann Goering and Hanna Reitsch.  He flew the suicidally dangerous Me 163 rocket plane, and tested the first British jets. He would have been the first man to break the sound barrier, except that the British government cancelled the programme and gave the technology to America.

A legend among aviation enthusiasts, his amazing life story deserves to be told in full - from crashing in front of Winston Churchill to unmasking a Neo-Nazi ring in the 1950s to his terrifying flights in primitive jets and rockets.

DESCRIPTION

Eric `Winkle' Brown, the former Chief Naval Test Pilot and Commanding Officer of the renowned Aerodynamics Flight at the Royal Aircraft Establishment, Farnborough, is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as having flown more types of aircraft than any other pilot in the world. The ground rules for this assessment were that only pilot-in-command flights should count, and that marks or variants of a basic type of aircraft were not included.

This remarkable record is reflected in the fact that Captain Brown is both the most decorated Fleet Air Arm and British test pilot. The variety of aircraft he has flown is incredible, and though his test and naval flying writings are already internationally known, he has now opened up pages of his Flying Log Books to reveal some of the more unusual types in his unique experience, and to relate their virtues or vices.

From the infamous Mitsubishi Zero-Sen and US Navy's piston-engine Grumman F8F-2 Bearcat, to the post-war swept wing de Havilland Swallow; from the North American Savage designed to take off from an aircraft carrier with a nuclear bomb, to the Supermarine Attacker, Eric `Winkle' Brown has tested their qualities and takes the reader into the cockpits of those exciting aircraft to thrill to the joys and hazards of flying both weird and wonderful aircraft with one of the greatest of all pilots.

Captain Brown's other books include "Wings on My Sleeve," "Wings of the Luftwaffe," and "Wings of the Navy."

DESCRIPTION

Carrier aircraft, since their beginning, have been a very special kind of machine and demand something equally special of the men who flew them. Landing on a pitching, bucking deck of a carrier, or catapulting over a plunging bow, shipboard aircraft and their pilots had to be exceptional.

Often, the real characteristics of these assorted aircraft lie forgotten in the annals of time, but Eric `Winkle' Brown, the first naval officer to head the elite Aerodynamics Flight at Farnborough, records his cockpit experiences testing British and American carrier aircraft.

Having enjoyed one of the most extraordinary careers in flying, Eric `Winkle' Brown places on record the flying characteristics, good bad and indifferent, of a myriad of aircraft, from the Fairey Swordfish and Albacore, Grumman Avenger and Panther, to the Supermarine Seafire, Douglas Dauntless, North American Skyray, de Havilland Sea Vixen and Blackburn Buccaneer.

Highly illustrated with cutaways, photographs and colour profiles, Wings of the Navy makes a valuable contribution to aviation history and keeps the memory of these diverse and absorbing aircraft alive.

DESCRIPTION

In December 1943, a top secret contract (E.24/43) was awarded to Miles Aircraft. The contract was to build the world's first supersonic jet capable of 1000mph. The only reliable source of data on supersonic objects came from the Armament Research Department and their wind tunnel tests on ammunition. From this, Miles developed an exceptionally thin-winged bullet shaped aircraft.  The research was inexplicably passed to the Americans in 1944. By December 1945, one prototype was virtually complete. The second, destined for an attempt at the sound barrier was 80 per cent complete. In February 1946, Captain Eric Brown was confirmed as the test pilot and October 1946 was set for the supersonic trials. However, on 12 February 1946, Miles were ordered to stop production.  No plausible explanation was given for the cancellation when Britain was within six months of breaking the sound barrier.

Eric Brown and others directly involved including Dennis Bancroft, the Chief Aerodynamicist on the M.52, have now come together in this book to try and finally solve the mystery behind the cancellation.

One of the world's greatest aircraft, for three decades pilots enthused about the Hunter and its smooth lines, Rolls-Royce Avon engine, outstanding handling characteristics and lively performance. Designed by Sir Sydney Camm, the genius behind the Hurricane, work on the Hunter commenced late in 1948, but the post-war economic situation in Britain delayed its first flight until 20 July 1951. In September 1953 Neville Duke piloted a Hunter to shatter the world speed record. This book traces the history of the Hunter across RAF and worldwide service, from design and development to the glory days and the unforgettable aerobatic displays with the Black Knights, Black Arrows and Blue Diamonds. A real pilot's aeroplane, the Hunter reigned supreme for fifty years, with the last example retired in July 2001.

DESCRIPTION

Please note this book is very heavy, hence the postage.

These days, few have heard of the Skylark sounding rocket. Yet, in November 1957, it was the first British rocket to reach space and became the basis of Britain's earliest space programme. Over the next 48 years hundreds more were fired, launching into space thousands of instruments that made pioneering observations of the Earth, Sun, stars and galaxies.

Here for the first time is the full story of the Skylark rocket, a fascinating story of the birth of British rocket technology and space science, a tale that started at the end of WWII and lasted until 2005.

This book is written in an accessible style, but with considerable academic merit, as it is based on many years of original research, carefully documented within its pages. It is profusely illustrated with hundreds of figures and photographs, many never before published.

The account will be of interest to all who are interested in how space science evolved, in the history of British technology and spaceflight, and who wish to learn more of these aspects of post-war engineering history.

DESCRIPTION

Home to the famous biennial Farnborough Air Show, the town of Farnborough in the south of England has had a pivotal role in the history of British aviation since flying commenced from the site in 1905.

The Royal Aeronautical Establishment was set up there and rapidly expanded as the scene of many significant developments in British aviation for many decades. Over the years, a range of buildings were constructed for various purposes and to house specific functions such as wind tunnels.

Many of these buildings are now listed and protected as part of a museum on the site. Farnborough is best known for its experiments and development of aircraft types. After the Second World War, it played host to a considerable variety of aircraft, including a number of Axis types captured during the war.

Beautifully illustrated and written by a leading aviation expert, SBAC Farnborough: A History is the definitive book on the subject of Farnborough from 1932 onwards.

PRODUCT DETAILS

Softcover

Publisher: British Interplanetray Society

DESCRIPTION
This book is a comprehensive history of the Space Department at the RAE Farnborough written by the scientists and engineers who actually worked in it. As such it provides a unique first-hand account of the pioneering work of the Department and the vagaries of the political decisions that affected its activities, from its formation in 1962 through to 2001 when the Establishment, after several changes in title, was privatised as Qinetiq.

In its heyday in the 1960s and 70s, the Department had hundreds of workers employed on a wide range of satellite technologies and programmes, as well as rockets, launch vehicles and orbital mechanics. The RAE Space Department was highly influential in the development of space technology in the UK and Europe, with many of its staff moving to senior positions in what became the European Space Agency. With its technical and organisational content, leavened by anecdotes, this book fills a major gap in the UK history of UK space exploration. It is essential reading for any serious space enthusiast.

DESCRIPTION

Richard Dennis has continued his books recording the history of the Royal Aircraft Establishment, Farnborough, with a long-overdue account of the work of the Establishment during the Second World War. The author started his career in aviation as an engineering apprentice at the Establishment in 1942, and hence this book is a first-hand account of the work which took place there in war years.

The author has carefully researched his subject by reading and summarising many wartime RAE reports, now fully declassified and readily available for study under the 2005 'Freedom of Information Act'. The combination of the first-hand knowledge of the work and the study of issued reports has enabled the wartime work of the thirteen RAE R&D departments to be fully detailed.

The story is enhanced by 135 carefully chosen photographs, many of them not previously published.

The Establishment was described by Sir Stafford Cripps, Minister of Aircraft Production, as 'The nerve centre of our effort in the air during the Second World War'. This detailed account of the wartime work fully confirms that view.

DESCRIPTION

In the early 1950s the wartime bomber station at Thurleigh was converted to one of the best-equipped flight research airfields in the world. For the next forty years much of the major UK flight testing for both military and civil purposes was done there until, surplus to requirements, it was closed in 1994. During that period great contributions were made, not only to the advancement of aeronautical science generally, but also, and importantly, to aviation safety.

This book gives a descriptive record of the work undertaken and provides something of a testimony to the ingenuity, inventiveness and dedication of the hundreds of scientists, engineers and support staff who worked there. The aviation heritage created in the United Kingdom over the past hundred years, though occasionally faltering, has allowed the continuing maintenance of an internationally strong position, and the part played by the Thurleigh establishment must, by any standards, be regarded as a very significant element of that heritage.

A quality book gloriously illustrated with many dozens of photographs.

DESCRIPTION

A FAST Exclusive.

The first sustained powered flight by a heavier than air machine in the UK took place at Farnborough, Hampshire, on 16th October, 1908. The aircraft, known as British Army Aeroplane No. 1A, was constructed and flown by Samuel Franklin Cody.

On 7th August 1913, Samuel Franklin Cody was killed. In what should have been a pleasure flight over Bramshot golf course, his aircraft broke up killing Cody and his unfortunate passenger. Probably as a result of a structural failure, the aircraft swerved violently, and both men fell out of the aircraft. The wreckage fell onto Ball Hill, an area within what subsequently became the Royal Aircraft Establishment and now known as the Cody Technology Park.

On the Centenary if his death, Farnborough Air Sciences Trust unveiled a statue of Cody as a memorial to Britain's colourful pioneer airman. To help raise funds for the project, the area around the statue was covered with engraved paving bricks bought to commemorate a family member, friend or other person who has a connection with Farnborough, the RAE or aviation in general. Each brick has a fascinating story behind it, and this book is a compilation of some of those wonderful stories, submitted by the purchaser.

DESCRIPTION

Beatrice Shilling became an engineer in 1929, a trespasser, at that time, in male territory, having decided in her teens, that this was her vocation. Her main achievements were technical and mostly to do with aircraft, so the story of her life would be incomplete without some detail of her work as an engineer at the Royal Aircraft Establishment at Farnborough.

But there was much more to her than a gift for solving technical problems. She had a dry sense of humour and total impatience with ceremony that did not always please her superiors. She was an outstanding motorcycle racer but nearly killed herself racing cars.

Her marriage was not a tranquil one, but it was strengthened by enforced separation while her husband was a pilot in Bomber Command; their regular correspondence took them through the many difficulties of those three years.

During the Second World War Beatrice Shilling became widely known, at least by the RAF, for solving a problem that affected fighter aircraft in action before and during the Battle of Britain. This problem was a tendency of the Rolls-Royce engine that powered Spitfires and Hurricanes to hesitate or cut out completely just as the pilot entered a dive in pursuit of, or in flight from, an enemy aircraft, a dangerous handicap not shared by the opposing Messerschmitts. The cause was not easy to find but Beatrice found it by tests and calculation, solving it with a very simple device which became known as 'Miss Shilling's Orifice'.

Although she was ambitious, she did not work at making influential friends and criticised her superiors at the Royal Aircraft Establishment if she did not respect their efforts. In spite of this she reached a senior position in the Establishment and received the OBE for her work during the war.

DESCRIPTION

As the world's first - and only - supersonic passenger transport aircraft, the Anglo-French Concorde has never been out of the news. From its maiden flight in 1969 until its retirement from airline service in 2003, Concorde's achievements have been perpetually in the superlative - the fastest, highest, most luxurious, most expensive (to build as well as to fly in) - to name just a few. The sleek white bird set standards in aeronautical design and passenger service that remain unsurpassed to this day. Here is the incredible story of an icon of 20th century design technology.

The 'Jump-jet' was the world's first vertical/short take-off and landing (VSTOL) operational jet aircraft. Developed using the revolutionary Pegasus engine, the Harrier has served the RAF and US Marine Corps well for over 30 years. Here, vividly told, is the fascinating story from tentative hovering by the Hawker P1127 in 1960 to today's frontline Harrier GR9 and AV-8B warplanes. A naval version, the Sea Harrier, entered service with the Royal Navy in 1979. Alongside the RAF Harrier it saw action in the Falklands War in 1982. More recently, Harriers have seen combat over Kosovo, Bosnia and Iraq. In the USA, a license-built version (the AV8-A/B) equips the US Marine Corps and is in service today in Iraq. Harriers also equip air forces in Spain and Thailand.

PRODUCT DETAILS

DESCRIPTION

Pyestock - its contribution to Jet Engine R&D is a NEW, REVISED & EXPANDED EDITION of Pyestock from RAE to Qinetiq.

It is n account of government sponsored gas turbine engine research that began in 1926 at the Royal Aircraft Establishment, Farnborough, and latterly at nearby Pyestock. The changes in management structure from, variously, a parliamentary vote funded government research establishment, nationalised company, government research establishment, nationalised company, government agency and eventually to QinetiQ, a listed public limited company, are discussed. Also the important, and in many cases pioneering, work carried out on a range of engine technologies is explored with particular emphasis on the research undertaken from the very early days on developing aerodynamic methods for designing axial-flow compressors, the type considered to provide the greatest long-term benefit. The book concludes with a postscript recalling the Author's career at Pyestock in addition to a number of appendices covering topics of related interest.

The book concludes with a postscript recalling the Author's career at Pyestock in addition to a number of appendices covering topics of related interest.

Ian McKenzie spent the whole of his professional career at Pyestock, entering the UK Scientific Civil Service in 1967 as a junior member of the Engine Test department involved with engine testing at simulated altitude flight conditions. From 1973 there followed a period of 21 years devoted to research on turbo-machinery. In 1995 he transferred to combustion research, finally becoming Engineering Manager for the Gas Turbine Technologies Group at QinetiQ, before retiring in 2005 after more than 37 years as a research engineer. Following a short period as a consultant at Trusted Experts, QinetiQ's consultancy arm, and having published the first edition of Pyestock, he and his wife, Philippa, relocated in 2006 from Hampshire to the Speyside region of northeast Scotland, settling in the village of Dufftown.

Wessex - for our purposes Dorset and Wiltshire, along with the western parts of Hampshire and Berkshire - has been part of Britain's aviation industry for over a hundred years. In his comprehensive new book, historian Mike Phipp recalls the area's proud heritage and details the many companies that have been involved in aviation over the years. Many well-known names are included, along with those that have faded into obscurity. The book tracks the mergers, takeovers, government specifications, wartime demand, economic pressures and brilliant entrepreneurship that made the rates of production and innovation in the area the subject of international reverence. Peacetime, and changes in the world market, led to the industry's steady decline in the second half of the twentieth century, but as Mike Phipp reminds us, the story of aviation in Wessex continues to this day.

From flimsy biplanes and flying boats to Second World War fighters, jet airliners and rocket fighters - not to mention hovercrafts and UAVs - Wessex Aviation Industry is the definitive guide to its subject, and will remain a valuable reference work in the history of aviation for years to come.

DESCRIPTION

The sequel to the best-selling The Lightning Boys, Lightning Boys 2 continues the theme of tales from pilots and other crew connected with this iconic aircraft, giving a rare insight into postwar fighter operations.

In 20 separate stories to intrigue, amaze and amuse, the book has been compiled and written by Richard Pike, himself a former Lightning pilot. The reader is taken to situations as diverse as intercepting 60 plus enemy aircraft; a desperate struggle in a cockpit flooded by tropical downpours; the difficulties of being affected by sudden and painful toothache at high altitude; and the curious encounter with an unidentified flying object. Yet another chapter paints a dramatic reconstruction of a scene in Germany when a Lightning, having entered an inadvertent, out-of-control spin, began an earthwards plunge towards a town centre.

DESCRIPTION

Samuel Cody, Britain's first aviator, was a naturalised British citizen (born in the USA) and a cowboy who modelled himself on Buffalo Bill. His story straddles two continents, two eras: the Wild West of America, where he rode the same cattle trails as Buffalo Bill, played the same roulette tables in Dodge City as Wyatt Earp and competed with Annie Oakley at sharp shooting; and later along with the Wright brothers he became a pioneer of early aviation, whose achievements led to the foundation of today's aviation industry and to Farnborough becoming synonymous with flying.

Samuel Cody's early activities in the USA are shrouded in mystery. He came to England at twenty-three years of age and, following the success of his melodrama 'The Klondyke Nugget,' turned to man-lifting kites. In 1903 Cody succeeded in crossing the English Channel in a canvas canoe towed by one of his large kites. His exploits came to the attention of the Admiralty, and then the Army. Cody went on to develop kites and later engine-driven aircraft and, after making the first powered flight in Britain, continued flying until he died in a crash in Farnborough in 1913.

DESCRIPTION

Why did the British, then the leading nation in science and technology, fall far behind in the race to develop the airplane before the First World War? Despite their initial advantage, they were overtaken by the Wright brothers in America, by the French and the Germans. Peter Reese, in this highly readable and highly illustrated account, delves into the fascinating early history of aviation as he describes what happened and why. He recalls the brilliant theoretical work of Sir George Cayley, the inventions of other pioneers of the nineteenth century and the daring exploits of the next generation of airmen, among them Samuel Cody, A.V. Roe, Bertram Dickson, Charles Rolls and Tommy Sopwith. His narrative is illustrated with a wonderful selection of over 120 archive drawings and photographs which record the men and the primitive flying machines of a century ago.

In this unique book, there is a brief description of early work on the transition from analogue to digital computing before dealing with the central digital computing services provided by the Mathematics Department. Because of the scope of the work carried out by the latter, only two specific examples are given - the 'digital' graphics work which originated in Computing Services Division, and the computational fluid dynamics work of Aerodynamics Department. The history concludes with a description of the final central computing facilities and the proposed purpose-built Mathematics & Computation building.

The figures used are reproductions from historical documents untouched except for renumbering and the 'inking in' of certain characters to make them readable.

DESCRIPTION

This is the story of Samuel Franklin Cody, Britain's first aviator, his amazing aeronautical achievements and the building of a replica of British Army Aeroplane No. 1A by Farnborough Air Sciences Trust to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the first British powered flight.

The first sustained powered flight by a heavier than air machine in the UK took place at Farnborough, Hampshire, on 16th October, 1908. The aircraft, known as British Army Aeroplane No. 1A, was constructed and flown by Samuel Franklin Cody. This book aims to set out a short history of the events which led to that first flight and to give a more detailed account of the building of a replica of that aircraft by the Farnborough Air Sciences Trust (FAST).

In just 18 months, the all-volunteer Cody Flyer Project team funded, designed and constructed the replica aeroplane. It is based in the FAST Museum, just a few yards from the point where Cody took off in October 1908.

DESCRIPTION
Originally designed to intercept Soviet bombers striking from the east, the Panavia Tornado Air Defence Variant was conceived as a stop gap, deriving from the hugely successful bomber type. It suffered in its early years from lack of agility and poor systems. However, despite the fact it would never be comparable to a dog fighter, the advent of more sophisticated missiles and on-board systems gave it the option of when and how to fight and turned this one-time lame duck into a high-value asset, capable of holding its own in the fast-moving air superiority environment.

With its first flight in 1979, this is a timely tribute and photographic study of the Tornado ADV before its operations cease in 2011.Featuring complete histories of all stations and squadrons to operate this type of aircraft alongside individual airframe histories, and stunningly illustrated with a number of striking colour photographs, this book charts the lifetime of a special aircraft, forming a perfect tribute to the Tornado ADV.

The evolution of the jet engine in Britain is one of the greatest achievements in British aviation history. The story of events surrounding this achievement is fascinating and intriguing and in many respects still remains controversial.

This book presents a new account of those events as they unfolded and describes the contribution of all the major participants. It covers the early beginnings of the aero gas turbine with A.A. Griffith and Frank Whittle's pioneering jet engine through to the emergence of Rolls-Royce as Britain's only major aero engine maker.

DESCRIPTION

This commemorative book has been produced to celebrate the aeronautical innovation and progress that has taken place during the 150-year history of the Royal Aeronautical Society.

Written by Society Member Richard Gardner, with contributions from other RAeS members and experts within our Specialist Groups, this anniversary book explores the many milestones in aerospace and aviation alongside striking images, some previously never before published.

Mr Alexey Isaikin FRAeS, President of Volga Dnepr Group, who supported publication of the book, said: "The Society embodies everything that is best about aerospace and aviation; professional standards, science and engineering excellence, and the realisation that there is always progress that can be achieved when we share out knowledge and expertise. A 150th anniversary is a great moment to stop and reflect on what has been achieved. It is an even more exciting opportunity to consider where the world of aerospace and aviation innovation is going next and how we can all benefit."

Never Ask Why - Life Adventures of Kitty Wielopolska

PRODUCT DETAILS

Paperback: 133 pages

Publisher: Michael D Dobson

DESCRIPTION
In 1943 World War II was turning in favour of the Allies and consideration was given to the industrial strategy to be employed to secure prosperity for Britain in the post-war world. The aviation industry had grown enormously in terms of both its production capability and its technological status and was selected as a primary engineering sector for exploitation. However, within this selection it was recognised that very large and expensive experimental facilities would be required to provide the necessary research capability and consequently, that their provision would necessarily have to be from Government sources.

One of the 'large and expensive' facilities seen to be required was a suite of wind tunnels capable of operating up to speeds well in excess of that of sound. A second required facility was an airfield to be fully equipped and of a size necessary for the conduct of research testing in flight using full-scale aircraft. These two facilities were constructed during the immediate post-war period on neighbouring sites a few miles to the north of the town of Bedford in the United Kingdom. The whole became known as 'The Royal Aircraft Establishment, Bedford'.

The primary purpose of this book is to describe the construction and operation of the wind tunnels and to briefly review some of the work undertaken during their forty-year period of service. In respect of the flight test facilities, a review of much of the work undertaken on the airfield was given in the book 'Wings Over Thurleigh' (also available via this website). However that reference did not contain any details of the construction of the airfield and its research facilities nor any commentary on the flying operations. These and one or two other aspects are therefore included to provide, within the two publications, a reasonably comprehensive historical record of the Establishment.

Edition Date : 2016

DESCRIPTION
The Royal Aircraft Establishment(RAE) at Farnborough was well known as a world leading centre for aerospace research and development. What is hardly known at all is the important role of UK scientists at the Royal Aircraft Establishment (RAE) in Farnborough in Cold War Aircraft Sonobuoy based Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW).

The book covers the early tentative beginning of airborne ASW in world war one through world war 2, the cold war, to the present day and also how sonobuoys were used to shadow USSR submarines. Early ASW aircraft had no means of detecting submerged submarines until aircraft dropped acoustic sensors (sonobuoys) were invented by the UKs Professor Blackett during World War 2 to help counter the U- Boat threat to Allied convoys.

The RAE became the UKs centre of excellence for sonobuoy system research and development in the late 1940s at the beginning of the cold war.

The book is a unique insider's view of UK airborne ASW as the author, now retired, worked in ASW at Farnborough for a number of years. He has consulted a multitude of sources including many ex colleagues who had worked at MOD research establishments at Farnborough, Portland and Winfrith, UK industry scientists and USA scientists from the cold war era.

The book has been written for the non-technical reader who has a broad appreciation of defence matters,

Sonobuoys are a major success story for UK industry with ULTRA Electronics having become the world's leading supplier of sonobuoys.

The book contains what the author believes is definitive account of why the Nimrod MRA4 project went so drastically wrong, why the Boeing P8 was ordered to eventually replace it and the story of the Thirty Year Development of the UKs new Multistatics System (search fields of separate active transmit and receive sonobuoys).
