DESCRIPTION

During the early 1900s, the Royal Aircraft Establishment (RAE) was created at Farnborough and soon became one of the most successful aeronautical research organisations in the world. Some of the greatest advances in aviation technology emanated from its laboratories and workshops, and working alongside the scientists were expert photographers who filmed many of their extraordinary experiments.

This historic footage has been preserved by the Farnborough Air Sciences Trust (FAST), and features in this first in a series of A to Z guides of the many successful and ground-breaking developments, as well as the not-so-successful trials and tribulations that took place at the Establishment.

This programme includes some unusual and previously unreleased footage, plus a rare interview with the famous former test pilot, Neville Duke.

PRODUCT DETAILS

Number of discs: 1

DVD Release Date: 23 Aug 2004

Run Time: 82 minutes

DESCRIPTION

From the Wright Brothers to the supersonic age, the advances in aircraft design have been well documented. But the more sophisticated the aircraft become, they are still limited by one thing - The Human Factor.

While the aircraft have changed almost beyond recognition, the men and women who fly them have not. Trying to match the often delicate tolerances of the human mind and body to the capability of these great inventions led to a new science known as Aviation Medicine, which deals with the effect of flight on the human being.

This programme features the extraordinary work of the experts of the former RAF Institute of Aviation Medicine at the Royal Aircraft Establishment in Farnborough, and their American Colleagues from the Army and Navy Schools of Aviation Medicine in the USA. Their often brave and daring work focused on overcoming such hazards as motion sickness, flying fatigue, crash injuries, fire, high altitude and underwater escape.

Many of their trials and experiments were captured on film. Some of this rare film archive, much of which has never been published before, was rescued from imminent destruction by the Farnborough Air Sciences Trust and is featured here in this second in a series of such compilations which celebrates the pioneering spirit of these great scientists and aviators.

DESCRIPTION

In October 1908, Colonel Samuel Franklin Cody made history with the first powered flight in Britain, which took place at Farnborough. Following his flight, the Royal Aircraft Establishment (RAE) was duly created, and Farnborough became the centre of Britain's experiments with aviation.

This programme, based on the television series broadcast on Meridian and on the Discovery Channel, chronicles the major events in the development of British Aviation and pays tribute to the pioneering spirit of the scientists, technicians, researchers and pilots who were responsible for many of the greatest advances in aviation technology including for example, the gas turbine jet engine, radar, ejector seats, delta winged flight, weapons, and supersonic flight in the form of Concorde. Farnborough is also home to the world famous Air Accident Investigation Branch (AAIB).

This remarkable story features interviews with some of the key experts and test pilots who contributed to Britain's mastery of the skies. Includes footage from the Farnborough Air Sciences Trust (FAST) film archive and extraordinary scenes of the trials and testing conducted by the RAE throughout the 1900s.

PRODUCT DETAILS

Number of discs: 1

DVD Release Date: 2007

Run Time: 60 minutes

DESCRIPTION

In the Gulf War, the Buccaneer proved that it could play a significant offensive role, both as a target marker for Tornados and as a bomber in its own right. This was no surprise to the Royal Navy and the RAF who considered that the Buccaneer had been one of the world's best low-level strike aircraft of the last 30 years.

This DVD features rare archive footage and exclusive interviews with the people who designed and flew the plane, giving a personal insight into the innovations, the testing and service life of this magnificent aircraft.

The mighty Buccaneer was an aircraft apparently forged from solid steel by the gods themselves and, although starting out as a rather underpowered beast, went on to become the best-loved post-war attack aircraft in the UK. In bygone years 'Buccs' would be found screaming along at hedge-top height (or lower!) leaving behind deafened, but happy, admirers.

"It is well liked because of its inherent stability at low level... It has earned and kept the respect of NATO allies." Commanding Officer, 16 Squadron RAF, February 1984.

Special DVD feature:

Development of steam catapults with early sea trials of various aircraft, including steam catapult trials with the NA39 Buccaneer prototype.

DESCRIPTION

The Harrier is known as the world's best selling combat 'jump jet'. The reality is that, almost forty years on after the first development aircraft flew, the harrier is still one jump ahead of its rivals.

This DVD salutes the achievements of the Harrier, in peace and war, over land and sea, through test and research; taking this unique British aircraft design towards the 21st century. We bring you the test pilots who lifted the first RAF Harrier into the air in 1966; and the squadron pilots who flew her in the fiercest of firefights - in the Falklands campaign and, most recently, in Bosnia.

This fast paced, action-packed DVD features original and dramatic footage provided by British Aerospace and the Ministry of Defence, to link with exclusive videotape taken of No1 (Fighter) Squadron's spectacular mass display of Harriers at Fairford's International Air Tattoo '96. We also 'eavesdrop' on briefing, kitting out and cockpit checks before a 'Four Ship' ground attack sortie from the home of the Harrier at RAF Wittering. Also, recorded for the first time at Boscombe Down Flight Test Centre, we show you the cockpit of the special 'fly-by wire' Harrier created by the Defence Evaluations & Research Agency to test the new flight control system for the combat 'jump jets' of the future - the US/British Joint Strike Fighter.

Special DVD feature:

Actor and aviation enthusiast, David Jason, arrives at RIAT in a two-seater Harrier, meets Test Pilot, Bill Bedford, while the Harrier squadron performs a simulated bombing raid.

"...well produced, nicely put together, well edited and worth a look, several times, if the all-time classic 'jump-jet' does it for you." Aviation News

This gift set contains The Story of Boeing DVD and The Little Book of the Flight.

The Story of Boeing - The Boeing Company Part 1: Developing aircraft requires huge expenditure. One company has on a number of occasions bet more than its entire net worth. The company was Boeing and its gambles have paid off making it an aviation giant. In 1952 Boeing developed a prototype transport plane - this was to become the Boeing 707.

The Boeing Company Part 2 - During the early 1960's the US Air Force, asked for tenders to build and supply a large transporter. The technology Boeing used to build the Jumbo plane was accumulated over many years - mainly from building bombers for the US Air Force during the war years.

The Little Book of the Flight - This tells the story of man's obsession with flight. From the myths and legends of the ancients, to the supersonic aircraft of the present day, the great feats and achievements in aviation history are described.
